Certainly, the old RPGs have better storylines... it's all they had going for them to really make them stand out.
But some of the newer RPGs are pretty ok... giving, far too many of them depend on uber-graphics and audio to make the sale, but if they can pull off a decent storyline -at least - then I'm pretty happy.

old-school RPG's like the ones that Niponichi makes is pretty good, especially Disgaea. But I have to agree.
I have FFX-2, right, but I'd rather play FFVII (yes I haven't beaten it yet!) than it. Why? Cuz the storyline is much more better!
However, I also find myself playing the more older RPG, like FFVI, FFV, and Chrono Trigger. These RPG's shaped what RPG is today (along with FFVII) _________________ I am teh whit3 mag3! I p1ck up peoplez with teh owwziz and the boo8oos!
There's been a fairly consistent showing of good RPGs throughout gaming history, but I'd say they're backing off a bit, while action games are taking over...
You'd never be able to have a hack and slash game like Dynasty Warriors on NES, for example (I love DW, but I'm not going to delude myself into thinking it's got depth).
guys remember the RPG game in playstation 2 called:
"Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits" it was a nice game right? a very amuzing game right?
then the company released another part of the series called
Arc the Lad: End of Darkness
here's a review of what someone wrote about it in gamefaqs.com
review title:No, this is the beginning of darkness... by:illogicaljoker
"If dumbing down and cross-breeding franchises to draw new audiences with shorter attention spans is the future of the RPG, I fear this is merely the beginning of darkness, and Arc The Lad: End of Darkness is one nail in the coffin.
I’ve been trying to think of something worthwhile to say about EoD, but aside from a confusing trial-and-error synthesis system and the resurrection of the tried-and-true job story tree, I come up at a loss for words. At least when Square made the “gaiden” (side-story) to FFX they put time and effort into it, streamlining the battle system and using a real mission mode that offered real variety and challenge. Namco is considerably less experienced, and their lack of finesse shows: EoD runs the exact same engine on pretty much the exact same maps (or variations thereof), uses the exact same characters and is generally – or generically and geriatric - boring to tears"
i hope now you got the picture of what i'm trying to say with posting this thread.
Note:when i read about that review i decided to not purchase

I actually rented this game, and it sucked a lot of air. The character's move are unreal (a guy performed a flying jump kick and traveled like fifty feet in the air forward) and it get's pretty repetitive. _________________ I am teh whit3 mag3! I p1ck up peoplez with teh owwziz and the boo8oos!
I thought you were talking about the REALLY old RPGs, the ones for SNES, men I can't forget the time I played for the first time The Legend of Zelda, or Chrono Trigger.

Dont forget Super Mario RPG! Man, that was my very first RPG, and I didn't know what I was doing. All I was doing was yelling "wtf are you doing Mario! Dont just stand there, jump on that dude's friggin head! Damn it this game blows!!!"
Then I played Final Fantasy III, (I understood RPG by this time) and was mesmerized by it. Chrono Trigger also held me the same way. All in all, I still have these games, in Cartridge AND Disk form (cept Super Mario RPG cuz that's Nintendo's property) _________________ I am teh whit3 mag3! Suikoden, Breath of Fire, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy 6,7,8, Tales of Series, Lufia, Sooooo many good games that most new games cannot even come close to. There are some, I admit, but not many. _________________
