Yeah the whole ending is kind of strange. I know that Shinji and Asuka become the next Adam and Eve. Also Eva 01 becomes the "new" Ark of humanity and holds all of earths knowledge.
They introduced some strange stuff at the end, such as everyone has an AT field that protects their souls from combining with each other. There is a website out there at has a very long and very good discussion on all the meanings of NGE. |

the whole story is just based in religion stuff and problems with messing with god or trying to play god. sure it was confusing and i wouldnt dare assume that i understood it, but i think the characters were pretty well developed (cept shinji, he's just a stupid depressed pussy) and deservingly ranks among the best mecha/romance animes.
theres also some scientific theories mixed in as well, but i forget all the details since its been a while. re watch it. pay more attention to the big long dialogues rather than skip over to the action scenes, but definitely pay more attention to misato's boobs =P |
Hmm you make it sound like another popular anime Equivalent exchange anyone? |

I've now seen the other OVA (?), Death & Rebirth. It helps to tidy up a lot of loose ends.

Death & Rebirth is a directors cut of the series, followed by a (cut?) version of EOE. Helps keep the earlier events fresh in mind, but it doesnt actually have any real new material in it. |

The director had more interesting in protraying the religious aspect of Evangelion, but the mangaka artist has added more scientific theories to the manga. For synchronization to occur, the pilots have to have the A10 section of their mind connect to the evas. This A10 section is the nerve bundle that is the receptor of emotions such as love (the director used the heart - the AT field is the wall that holds the light of a heart). The mangaka and director have two different places where they had placed importances on love: the scientific explanation of the brain and the metaphysical suggestion of the heart. The mangaka is right, by the way. |

hahaha, that's a funny picture posted above... anyways....
NGE is one of those animes that you have to pay attention to every detail and follow along, or you're going to get lost quick. I understood the jist of it the first time through without needing to know about all that religious stuff thrown in there. But reading magazine articles and other internet discussions added a little more understanding to it.
Basically, you need to realize that Gendo changed his mind after Yui's death and her reincarnation as the EVA-01's soul. He wanted the 01 to become God instead of his original plan of combining all souls on earth into one (return to the Lilum). Although knowing about the religion helps (mainly Adam, Eve, and Lilith), I think knowing about psychology makes it more understandable and enjoyable.
Watching these three children turn from semi-well adjusted individuals to puddles of mush at the end is why I recommend this series to anyone who hasn't seen it (anime fan or not). It's an escape from the typical "monster of the week, the good-guys always win" slush that we see on Saturday morning. Hooray for tv that makes you think! _________________

| You just can't see it once and expect to understand everything all at once. Even now, after years of having I learn something new, I see a new aspect open up in front of me after watching End. The truth is, it's alot like religion. It's there for you to soak up, and after that you just interpret it for yourself. Don't run away scared from and certainly don't feel dumb. |

Ah NGE's end was some really deep psychological sh!t. So it was basically just words devoid of action but if you listen to it closely, you not only understand you see the peotry in the monologs (even it the dubbed version). But if that does not work for you, try getting high next time you watch it LOL (kidding: say no to drugs)

I actually very much appreciated that as being the ending they chose. It's a shame that they couldn't do the same thing for all the characters as they with Shinji, but as they said, there wasn't enough time. The series isn't about typical "action heroes" who go back to base and party after a job well-done. It's a series about "real people" put into strenuous and horrifying situations and how they react to them. Though I doubt anyone here will step up and admit this, no matter how much we all dream of being mecha-robot pilots, if we were to ACTUALLY be put in the heat of battle and told the world was in our hands, that would definitely get your nerves shaking and your heart beating a little harder.
War is war. Killing is killing. It's horrendous and the series does a perfect job in showing us that it's not all fun and games. People die during battle and with that comes guilt, anxiety, and trauma. If it were just three kids going around beating up monsters then chilling back at base, it would just be another lame beat-em-up action cartoon. Having all the intellectual monologues and honest soul-searching paints us an incredibly real picture.

Ah yes, a very famous quote from the series. And of course, like many vague metaphors, it could mean whatever the beholder wants it to believe. To me, it represents mankind's ever-enduring quest for science and knowledge. Humans are continually striving to understand the world and the universe, no matter what the cost. The darkness is what is yet to be explored, the fire is our thirst for knowledge. In NGE's sense, it's Geshurn/NERV's and Seele's endeavor in awakening the first angel. _________________
