I have been addicted to American horror since I was small, and after a while nothing scared me anymore, until I began watching J-Horror, then my fear scyrocketed back to a 6 year olds. So, I am asking which you think is better, japanese or american horror movies? Give your reasons if you wish.

well, if you think about it, I would suspect that asian films are more scaries since they have a more open grading scale. In america, the movies are basically rated pg-13 or R for horror films, but in japan there exists no such thing making it easier to add more scarier stuff and more graphic stuff. If you think about it, america's number one teen viewed horror movie, The Ring, was taken from the japanese film Ringu

does that really change the scariness of them? what about the grudge? the ring? the eye? (although thats cantonese..) japanese stuff just reaches a gritty level of creepiness that americans ignore. Takashi Shimizu said it best, "Americans think that blood and gore, and things you dont know are scary. I believe that the things you do know can be much more frightening than the things you dont" like, hands coming out of the dishes, the television fizzing out and making strange noises while getting louder, your loved ones turning on you. those are frightening. this is naturalistic horror though.

Well, Japanese or other Asian horror movies never made to Hollywood, which means they are never popular or big in a certain sense. however, they are scary, if that's what you want. Ring, Grudge, they are nothing compare to those zombie movies in the Asian area.

personally, i dont really find american horror movies scary. they might be nice to watch and all, but they dont really fulfill the "horror" part.

hmmm. jap and korean horror would be better if you ask me.

I think japanese horror are better then some american ones because movies such as "The Grudge" or "The Ring", were better and more scarier since I had no clue what they were saying Razz

Well, they are, as a matter of fact. The American ones, as they ae intends to grab the Oscar awards, must made it into Hollywood, and they must be the ones that suitable for young kids (with adults). As for the Japanese, or other Asian ones, they don't really care, and the culture is different, so they tend to make horror movies as scary as possible.

Make it to Hollywood? Hollywood is American.... yes some Asian films get reconized, but it's ultimately for American audiences.
The American Ring, Grudge, etc., imo sucked. Also the teen movies, eg, What you did last summer series, however popular, I don't think are as scary.
I guess we compare only Japanese and American here (mainly) bc this is an Anime/Manga site, but there are other countries out there -.-
Which brings to the point. Asian horror films are not that popular compared to American ones, so it tends to be underrated.
I remember Ring 2 (JPN) only scared me at one point, but Ring 2 (US) was like a joke... and I do get scared easily (still can't play Fatal Frame)

Japanese horror movies are scary but what they lack could be done by American horror movies with their sound effects and the graphics. Budget wise itself is already different. However, American horror movies are starting to get less scarier compared to what it was last time. Well, Armytiville Horror (sorry about the spelling, I can never get it right) wasn't bad. Got freaked out by it quite a few times. If you want to compare with American Horror movies, have you all watched Poltergeist and Exorcist 1 - 3? From what I heard, a friend of mine told me that the people that made the 2nd part and 3rd part of Exorcist died of accidents when they were making the movie and also after the movie was released... Confused

yes i have. the only good exorcist was 1 and the first half of 2. the rest were crap. however i think that the lack of great special effects makes it even better. it brings it down to a somewhat normal everyday level. no fake noises or explosions or blood splatters. its all done for real. like in the final scene of Ju-On:THe Grudge (the 4th Ju On movie in Japan), Kayako was a real actress doing every movement and ever noise. you could hear the protagonists heavy fearful breathing and you could watch and hear every movement and noise that Kayako made. In the american Grudge, they added music, added noises, added other noises besides the clicking and steps. it just killed everything the scene was supposed to be.
