Today I had an adventure. I ran onto a file type I had never seen before. This styrange and unusual file type was called a .mkv file. After much searching, I finally found some information on it (all praise the great google engine for its dilligence).
Apparently, this strange video file is a Matroska video file. Now, I have been doing the fan-sub thing for a while and I have never before run across this type of file. Luckily, I found a place where I can get the codec so I can actually play this file.
Since I am a nice person, I thought I would post to you all where you too can find this peculiar codec.

This is actually a very nice codec and has a lot of nice options. I must admit I find it tedious that people seem to go out of their way to use these crazy codec though. I mean, it like, Hi, my friend bob made this special codec so I am going to do this one series with it so you have to go find his special codec.
*sigh* Ah well, anyway, enjoy this crazy new codec of spiffiness. |

Heh, that is indeed what I said isn't it? Hence my comment about praising the google engine. Silly me, I should refrain from my strange brand o' humor and just be forthright I suppose.
Anyway, I just thought I was being nice by posting a direct link here because I know a few fan subbers who use the format these days (mostly for things that don't have reviews/synopsis yet, and my silly logical brain thought that was the explaination).
I know that Shounen-ai Fansubbers uses the .mkv format and they have some pretty good stuff. Also, Animeka uses it. I've found that it is a very popular format for those people who are subbing in french (some of them are even nice enough to sub both french and english format and put them both in the file). Also, Anime Blitz uses this format fairly often.
Anyway, this is pretty handy for those people who don't speak English primarily and still want their subs. When I can, I get my subs with both english and spanish subtitles. |

i prefer to use media player classic with K-lite Mega Codec Pack over VLC since VLC is very bloated and uses up a lot of my computer resources. i also stick with k-lite mega codec pack since they also have the codecs i need for encoding some vids. |

I'm just wondering....what's so great about mkv files?
I kinda don't like it since I have to use media Player classic to watch them.
what's so special about it? Is it because it's clear? _________________

| what's wrong with mpc? gotta love mpc, man. i think it's the best media player out there for windows. anyway, for your mkv question. mkv is a file container like ogm as you may have known. the difference is, from the site informed, supposedly that mkv's can store much more compacted audio files with greater quality. lol, i forgot if that's correct since it's been a while ^_^;. but i do know this and the most reason people will use mkv is that the subtitles can be in many different fonts and colors from different languages. |
