I think Chobits is a critique on the self-absorbed alienation from society rather than individualism. Individualism broadly speaking means independence from others, but not the type of isolation from society which Chobits criticizes.
It is much of a critical look of our world today in which technology has removed some of the time-tested traditions that bind humanity together, i.e. sloppy emails replacing an emotion-filled hand written letter, or microwaves removing the need of a dedicated time to craft a wonderful dish. We become absorbed in ourselves, not of the desire to become independent but rather simply because we now live in a society in which our own inventions has begun to slowly erode the interpersonal bonds that make us human.
Of course, I could be reading WAY too much into this.
Chobits is great. Go watch it for fun. |
I agree with your analysis, of "self-absorbed alienation from society"...
but you're failing to realise that it's in fact individualism taken to its ultimate expression, where all that matters is my welfare, my pleasures (such hedonism!), at a rate I just don't care anymore with others... And - behold! - All this through my PC (in Chobits, "persocom", that in japanese is short for "Personal Computer"!). Through my comp, I create a world where I have all control, where I won't get hurt, or rejected by the one I like, or anything else. (It's no wonder that those "date sims" are so popular in Japan).
And that's exactly against that kind of society that Studio Clamp is warning their readers, so they doesn't become absorbed in theirselves, where the individual stands against the community (they should instead befriends and cooperate, for both existence's sake).
Definitively, Chobits is a must-read... _________________ De que vale tanto orgulho | Is it worth so much pride

@Deedark:
I see you point, but I disagree that what I called "self-absorbed alienation from society" is the ultimate form of individualism. I agree with your definition that Individualism is after all to become solely independent and self-sufficient. It stresses that individual interests are ethically paramount and must be achieved through individual action. It is to allow the individual to free himself from the need to have a society at all.
However, I believe that in chobits, the creation of that world through the persocom in which the person has the ultimate control really does not eliminate the need for society. Instead, it creates the false illusion of independence and self-actualization while failing to recognize the inherent flaw in that system. That flaw is that the world he attempts to create is but his own illusion of the world. Individualism stresses the independence from society AS IS, but the chobits maniacs shy away from society into the seclusion of what they think is or what they want the world to be.
I believe that the ultimate form of individualism is to achieve complete freedom of action and desires GIVEN the rules that society supposedly imposes. The individual does not change the rules of society, but rather achieves the state in which those rules contain little meaning for him. Thus I don't find the self-absorbed seclusion in the world created with the persocom to be individualism but rather a cowardly shying away from the attempts to even gain independence from society in the first place.
P.S
Dating sims are so cute sometimes, if we disregard the social remifications they entail. <(' '<) ^_^ |

| You must watch chobits... NOW. GREAT anime. Definatly something you need to watch. The music is cool. The storyline is great. VERY funny anime. I noticed some similarities to Onegai Teacher (dont ask) and i definatly concluded, if you liked Onegai Teacher, youll love Chobits. (Side note: "Persocoms" can either be translated as "Person-Coms" or just as computers, but i like leaving it as Persocoms, sounds better) |

Dang! The robots are too cute! Everyone watched it, right? Well, I got confused on this part: you know, where Hideki had to reach to you-know-where just to have Chii running. I mean, what's up with that? That was soooooo weird. Anyway, it's still cute. Hehe. Watch it. |

well my vote was "*SMACk* How dare you even ask!"
actually I just finished the anime yesterday I finished the manga 1st. I prefer the manga better because the guy said something more romantic. I think it was " I want to make love to chii not so I can love her. I want to make love to chii becasue I love her. Even if we can't go all the way i'll love her anyways." |
