Voices of a Distant Star - it's short and sweet, plus very thought provoking. Being so short, it's easier to ask someone for just a "few minutes" of their time to show them something, then when they see a story that isn't about girls with big boobs or pokemon, they are intrigued and ask for more.
Cowboy Bebop - being on Cartoon Network, many people stumble upon this gem. I have a couple volumes to show friends during the Cowboy Bebop-less hours (otherwise known as "daytime"). Seeing the cool demeanor of the characters and the action oriented stories make others realize that not all anime is cutesy-wootsy.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - This one takes a little more effort, but it does work. This is one of those series that needs to be seen from beginning to end and luckily, the story is so enticing that most people cannot stop watching it once they have begun. The complicated relationships between the characters make this an excellent series for anyone who is taking psychology. I was surprised to find out that many of the people I work with have already seen this series.
Excel Saga (english dub) - I've shown this to a couple parents before and even they found this to be hysterical. There is enough americanization in the dub-version to become more friendly to the non-otaku kind. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
Gravitation - Even if it has shounenai elements (I still love the term "homo-erotic" XD) in it, it is pretty light and a short series (13 episodes) to get people introduced into animated series that require more brain than children's series like Heidi or Pokemon *ducks the flying tomatos thrown by Pokemon fans*
Fullmetal Alchemist -This is a pretty heavy series with a lot of episodes, but my boyfriend got hooked to this series, even though he doesn't call himself an anime fan. The inclusion of many alchemistic symbols as well as a bible reference (the 7 sins) is ideal for myth or RPG fans (then again, which RPG fan is not into anime, at least to some extent?). Plus you have a lot of historical references thrown in, so it should keep even parents entertained. Not recommended for younger children though
And I wouldn't mind showing them dubs. From experience, many people who haven't gotten into touch yet with some anime targeted to older audiences, shy away from subs. They are used to concentrating on conversations and not reading subs! You can always explain later what has been wrongly translated and recommend them the subbed version.
People who have been downloading anime or buying subbed versions for years are used to reading subtitles and seeing the action at the same time. Plus, in Germany, we would have to translate English subs into German in our heads, which is an additional obstacle (FYI German subs suck because most of the time (98%) they just translate word by word from English subs to German and thus mistakes multiply (and many people seem to not understand English puns and the like >_>))
It'd depend on the person's taste in genre. Romance, action/adventure, sci-fi.. There's a lot out there.
But one that I had got a friend of mine hooked on anime/manga was "First Love".
Then she started into all my Yaoi series. @x@
Beck to people that loves music or bandplayer (I'm one of em and I hooked up my band)
Naruto to boys (and girls that have a boyfriend that loves talking about anime)
School rumble to my sisters (good family times eh?) _________________ ã‚?ã?Ÿã?— ã?¯ã€€ã?¾ã‚‹å? ã?•ã‚‹ã?¾ã‚“ ã?§ã?™

I have seen more people hooked by Ranma 1/2 then by any other anime, it is a fairly good show for a new comer. It has comedy, action, a little romance while being somewhat cheesy at the same time.
The only other thing that I have seen come this close for addiction potential are Miyazakis movies.
o and hajime no ippo would be good after they have seen naruto/bleach so they could see what real anime is about and just becuz it has good animation doesn't make it the best. _________________

i would never chose anything with giant robots or mecha like a gundam or anything so NGE and Raxephon are out as well. even though they are both great if a non anime fan hears are sees giant robots its like a cross to a vampire. so i would probably go with berserk, outlaw star, trigun, or Hajime no Ippo. Samurai Champloo is already playing on regular tv but thats a good one too and lots of people already like it both anime and non anime fans alike. _________________ um yeah so you think so too?
start with love hina/ah! megami-sama first for the girls; for guys, DBZ/naruto. gradually, i would integrate the genre of mecha for both (FMP), then fighting for the girls and romantic-comedy for the guys. soon, they'll all start to watch what i do

I hooked my cousin on Fullmetal Alchemist. Now she's a bigger FMA fan than I am. Of course, she was already into anime, but she was more of a casual fan, mainly of Inuyasha. But still, FMA is an awesome series that should appeal to everyone but the most narrow minded of critics.
If you want to talk people who dont like anime at all and/or just dont understand it or its appeal, I have a friend who was like that. Then, he started reading one of my Naruto manga, and now, although he isnt a hard-core otaku as I am, he still reads it somewhat willingly and is able to talk about it a bit. Oh, and I also, hem hem, "introduced" him to Fullmetal Alchemist as well (as in, I practiaclly forced him to read the manga), and now he reads those too.
So, my suggestions would be Naruto or FMA, with FMA probably being the most likely to succeed. _________________ [IMG:500:100:5f9d323c6a]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/spender/Witchbladebanner3.jpg[/img:5f9d323c6a]
If you're out there, I'll find you.
Honestly, there are different animes meant for different groups of people.
For guys, it would be usually mecha and harem animes, such as Gundam Seed or Shuffle and Full Metal Panic. fanservice would also serve as an attraction factor. Genres such as fantasy and action can also serve as an attraction factor as well, animes like Shakugan no Shana or Bleach.
For girls, it would either be romance or hmm...animes with lots of good-looking guys I guess. Fruits Basket, Boys Be and maybe the occasional heartwarming or cheery anime like Cardcaptor Sakura would be good.
