Finding yourself

I've been reading a book about a guy who goes off to live cut away from civilization and that got me thinking about all those people who take little journeys like that. What possesses people to go and what do they really find out about themselves, other than what to do to survive in the wilderness. Is it just self inflicted survival training or spiritual development or what?

Well it can be for lots of reasons.. it could be the finding of what you really want to do in life , or just to see a new world with out the strings of society or parents on you, to see what's truley important to you... i mean if you want to raise sheep in Zanzabar then , then by all means raise sheep in Zanzabar.....

maybe the poor guy/gal just wants to find some solace in solitude.
taking the journey itself could be an attempt to define yourself as separate from 'the pack'. The journey could empower them because they see it as a way to control their own life. or maybe they believe they can establish a greater affinity with the 'land' by taking the journey.

it would be spiritual training. just like hermits and stuffs. they get away from civilization just to avoid temptations and stuffs.
but if normal persons do that thinking for practicing their survival skills and to get xcitement then they are utterly s2pid.

.. it may have visual answer to your question. I think that the reason which droves us to travel is the passion to see new lands and experience new things.
