I'm glad they used Noto Mamiko for the voice role of Enma Ai, she's one of my favorite seiyu. Seems like she also performed the ending song, though I'm not surprised, since she has pretty good singing voice.

BTW, enjoy this picture I found.

Anyone know what Enma Ai's name means translated. I believe Ai is love or something similar, so I am curious as to what Enma means.

Enma is the name of the Buddhist myth's great king of underworld who judges the dead. He is the judge of your deeds during life, and reads the list of your deeds written on a paper to decide if you should go to hell or not.
I dunno if that particular Ai means love, might have different kanji.

Ironically, all of the abysimally evil people would inevitably go straight to hell after death, even without Enma Ai sending them there without delay. In the end, the "contractor" loses even salvation without hope of ever being released from suffering. Though nothing is gained and immeasurably more is lost, the path of revenge is chosen.

I wonder what this is all about. Is it a test of Enma Ai's judgement ability, or is it to find a strong soul? Why do they have shitty computers with 5 1/4" floppy drives installed in hell Wink ?

Whether there exists a worldly solution to the problems without condemning oneself to eternal suffering, remains an open question. When choosing one path, the other one will be forever unknown. I hope that there will be a "client" who actually returns the voodoo doll to Enma Ai, and I want to see what happens thereafter.

Yeah... These last three episodes were decent at best. What seperated them from being useless was the fact that they changed how the person made the deal is effected afterwards. I did like the Office Lady one, as it saw Ai's minions in work which I found to be hilarious.

"Rawr! I am an denzien of the underworld, who only heeds the beck and call of the Judge of the Underworld and has known countless suffering... But I'll collate these right away."

Something's going to have to impress me within the next two episodes, or I'm walking away from this series.

The episodes are getting too repetitive, the whole revenge sequence reminds me of final fantasy summons. Enma Ai says the same thing every episode and it's always the same routine. It's disappointing, I was expecting some kind of character developement from the hell characters.

Well that's why I ranked this lower than Mushishi and Aria (all 3 are episodic animes) Mushishi is just... beautiful and mystical, while Aria is the milder form of Honey and Clover.

But it's not without it's strength though. Well, if you are interested in human psychology and humanity that is, because this one shows the psychotic and chaotic nature of humans at it's fullest.

It also shows lot of social problems Japan has. This reminds me of Paranoia Agent alot. I think social life in Japan is pretty brutal compared to most other countries.

I mean come on. Some of these people have a choice between being bullied or stalked for a couple of years or however long their life lasts and burning in Hell for all eternity and they still end up picking Hell. Evil or Very Mad

Does that sound like a well-thought out decision? If she gave me that doll I would think about it for maybe an hour, then bury it in the ground in a locked box and NEVER dig it up again. I wouldn't pull the string in a fit of passion. Oh whoops, I gotta go to Hell now when I die. But I got revenge on that ONE person I hated first. Hooray, I hope I don't run into anymore bad people during my lifetime.

The only person I thought had a truly convincing story was the baseball player. His situation was intense enough that I could see him damning himself for the sake of revenge.

Japan does have its problems, but I do not think that an accurate picture is presented in entertainment. Entertainment must always be a little extreme, otherwise it would be boring and no one would watch it anyway. I'm certain that these situations exist, but not the extent that TV shows them.

After all, in our television, we have people always getting bullied, getting arrested, or some other thing because it is entertaining. If we wanted the truthful mundane, we'd live our own lives. But that's mundane, so we escape into these activities because we are bored with our own lives.

Well to me, it seems they take everything that might happens around the world, and put in the best situation possible.

Right situation, right sorts of minds, if you know what I mean Razz True, that somehow we go "WTF?! I can deal with it!!" when we are presented with the stories but that is yours mindset. Dealt with the same kind of situation, developed in the same manner, with the same mindset, and you might yourself commiting suicide...

Like what the girl in the first episode almost did btw.

Problems like that doesn't happen all the time like in some movies or tv shows. But, bullying is lot more common in Japan's schools than in western countries. This probably applies to Korea and other Asian countries with similar school system as Japan. After all, Korea's school system was molded based on Japan's.
I know bullying happens every where in the world, but you'll be more likely to experience bullying if you went to Japan's schools.

@silverkitsune

Bullying is mainly caused through the strictly hierarchical social system e.g. in Japan. Not neccessarily, but quite often the socially higher standing senpais mistreat their "lower standing" kohais, simply because the older or more experienced individual is right per default. Only with hard evidence will a kohai be able to convince other senpais of the wrongdoing of another senpai. A quite terrible situation.

In "Hell Girl" this fact is naturally overstated to produce drama and a good sense of hopelessness. I thought the guy of ep03 would have had the chance to get his senpai arrested, if he only had been a little bit more aggressive. That was really sad Confused .

I think that the message of "Hell Girl" is the following one:

To live for vengeance, is to live for sin. Doing one evil doesn't undo another evil, and in the end vengeance destroys your own existence.
