Renton

The story is set in an alternate future (?) where Renton is a young boy growing up in a boring city who wants to fly around the world dreams of catching a good Trapar wave so he can practice some moves on his grav board just like his hero surfer Holland. Trapar are apparently invisible waves of some sort of energy that humans can harness by 'surfing' on them usually on giant mechs called LFOs. Unfortunately for Renton, his future is bleak where the only LFO pilots tend to be military pilots, he still dreams of joining a band of rouge surfers led by Holland called Gekko State, one of the greatest surfers known and 'ref' the free skies.

One day an LFO never seen by Renton before crashes into his room and he gets a once in a life time chance to join the Gekko State. A weird pale angelic girl appears before Renton along with his hero Holland. But why is the military hot in pursuit?

The mysterious girl: Eureka

Sure we start off with an incredibly cheesy opening sequence of a kid surfing in the air and then a mech tranforming into a giant surfer but once you overlook the weirdness of the opening sequence, the song even grows on you. The characters are all unique and seem to have their own personalities, just how much depth they have is too early to tell. The story is light hearted on the surface but there is a dark secret being kept on how Renton's father died and the secret behind the mysterious girl Eureka, LFOs and Renton's lost sister. Renton himself reminds me of Naota from FLCL, a whiny brat who gets teased but has a crush on the mysterious Eureka. The episodes so far have almost Cowboy Bebop feel, a crew on the Gekko-Go doing random missions to earn enough cash to survive day to day needs but with a dark conspirarcy lurking in the country as the military starts to hunt for Type Zero Nirvash.

Animation is top notch, on par with some OAVs as Bones Studio does an excellent job on most of the scenes whether they are action packed battle ones or just laid back life scenes. There is also no shortage of comedy among the motely crew of the Gekko-Go and as an added bonus, we get to hang out with probably one of the sexiest anime chicks this spring season.You know you want to watch the show now =)
