ADV revokes its manga line-up
Posted on Wednesday, June 14th 2006 by Guido

Two days ago starbulletin.com reported that ADV has discontinued or cancelled over 50 manga titles to which owns the license.

Some of this manga include:
Blue Inferior, Noodle Fighter Miki, R^2, Ruler of the Land, etc.

For their part, manga readers remain skeptical whether or not ADV would be able to complete those titles in-progress that have not been cancelled outright yet.

Hmmm. Did they drop them, if at all, because they didn't sell? I would guess so. . .
On a bit happier note, does that mean we'll be able to download them now? :D

It seems anime is on a downturn... not in terms of popularity but people purchasing items... that or the companies over expanded in the late 90's and early 2000. CPM just recently went bankrupt.

yeah more and more just download them and don't buy them also mainly because each dvd has an average of 3 to 6 episodes and runs from $20 to $25....then can be really expensive for just a few episodes

Time to start learning to read Japanese...
;)

Yeah it stinks, but when you can get bootlegs from China/etc for $20 for the whole series(or at least 10-12 episodes per DVD), they are shooting themselves in the foot unless they offer a serious competing product. Most of America is concerned right now with price, and they don't care where it's made or by whom. Just go over and walk into China-Mart(formerly Wal-Mart). So 3 episodes per DVD isn't working when I can buy a whole season of most U.S. TV shows for $20 at Best Buy.

I honestly think that it depends on the title and how quickly it is released. That can be a win-win situation. i still visit the local comic shop looking for new stuff to read that I would never bother to look for online. Boot leg dvds can be confusing and poorly translated with poor quality video. I still think it is just best to buy them at bestbuy or even rent it

If anything, I feel bad for the artists that have lost out from the fallout. Blame profit hungry publishers. If amime/manga wasn't so exhobently overpriced I would certainly buy more of it.

It is a shame that anime and manga has to be so overpriced, with a single graphic novel being up to 11 dollars now and 25 dollars for individual episode DVDs. But look at what prices for anime is in Japan itself and you'll thank yur lucky stars that you get a whole 4 episodes for 20 bucks. The real problem stems from companies just doing bad jobs in picking what titles should come out and the quality that they produce and edit the material for North American audiences. Some may try their darndest, but its a sad fact that manga and anime is not made for any one outside of Japan, leaving the casual fan to get the few ttles he can understand and leaving the rest of the industry to the few hard-cores out there. Basing an entire industry on the rabid fanboy has failed in the past and it will fail again.

well...ADV seems to Pick up A LOT of unknown titles to begin with. Most of them are...weird.
ADV has some great titles too like Chrno Crusade, ZOE etc. well...those are my picks anyways, and I also Download via BT but once a series made me interested in it I buy the licensed DVD that's scheduled to be released or I just wait for the Bundle pack which takes years^^

I tried it myself...I could ONLY fit 4 episodes of 25 mins of anime to a single DVD (4.5GB), so I can't say anything about getting only 4 eps per DVD for $20-$25.

Well, I'm glad Chrono Xrusade is still being continued. Once volume 8 is released this month, i guess i can kiss ADV Manga goodbye

I wish the didn't cancel Peacemaker Kurogane T_T

All commercial DVDs are highly compressed and dual-layer, so eight episodes is a cinch, with 12-16 being easily doable if you compress it to DIVX levels. About 250mb per episode nets you results that are identical to TV quality/what was originally broadcast., or an entire season quite easily.

We don't need superb quality like a movie.

ADVs real problem, though, was to not just hook up with a translation group and use their talent. Officially licensed/endorsed fansubs that are cleaned up, with better sound, and can play on any DVD player - that's almost no work on their part and generates easy income...

Or they can do it the hard way - and pay for voice actors and all the insane production costs associated with a typical DVD. And fail when the fansubbers make a better quality product for nothing versus their slow, poor quality, and vastly overpriced compared to other DVDs shows.

I'm also amazed that the TV networks don't just run fansubbed shows(cleaned up and licensed/with the groups' cooperation, of course) - the reality is that nobody would mind reading subtitles - at least not the hardcore fans who are on at midnight watching Adult Swim.

I haven't bought any manga in ages -_-;
I need to go buy some more lol
I like AdV's choice of pics. It has random shows that no one has ever heard of....which is cool because it could be something cool.0_0

n my opinion, i think why no ne's buying is because the american version is like a totally new stroy compared to the original. (00); Their translateion could be off, and editing and censoring things, bleh XP us fans don't appreciate that. Just my opinion ^^

And also because of People like me who hasn't watched anime in awhile. ^_~;

I agree it's mostly because the company has the americanise most of their foreign products since they have different standards compared to japans and thats whats ruining it for them.
People prefer fansubs because they're getting the original product in all it's glory with any editing and the subs are pretty close direct translations from the original japanese instead of dubs which change one to many things ruining the general story and plot.

Well, that sucks. I hope they still continue distributing Yotsuba&!

It'll be only the most popular manga titles they're keeping, everything else will be discontinued. They'll just be more selective in the future. ADV is not like Viz Media or TOKYOPOP, so they can't afford to waste money on manga most people wouldn't buy.

ok... it sux that ADV is dropping some of its projects, but the most annoying thing is this:

"On a bit happier note, does that mean we'll be able to download them now? :D" - Cain16

WTF is that? Its nothing to be happy about, damn leechers... who cares about them being expensive. If u really like the anime just save up for it and buy them.

Buying anime and collecting them is a hobby, and most hobbies like these require money. You guys should really check out those figures that are out there... they go from $20 to $90 PER FIGURE.
