Grave of the Fireflies

I was surprised to see the relatively low rating on this film. Thus, I guess I can say I'm sort of honoured to be the first to put up a deserved full five stars.
The animation in this film has been negatively described as ''dated'', though I can honestly see no reasons behind such a statement. The character designs are wonderful, and the whole thing moves fluidly and beautifully. The incredibly scenic and wonderfully done backgrounds only help giving this film its wonderful atmosphere. It could be described as dated, sure, but I'd take this kind of ''dated'' above the artificial looking computer-generated graphics of a lot of modern animation series any day... (Read More)

Princess Mononoke
    by nickofsatan
If there was one work that I think defines the ability of animation, this would no doubt be the one. But, that is not why I think Princess Mononoke deserves a ten.
Any way you look at it, the basic structure of the story and characters is relatively generic. All the characters are pretty much good or evil, and the romance portion is nothing out of the ordinary. However, with the abilities of Miyazaki and modern day animation, this generic idea has been transformed into a great work of art.
Both the music and the animation are excellent. The music definitely stands out as one of the best ever. It was very clear and deep at the same time. The animation was very balanced, working well on both color and detail... (Read More) |
Spirited Away
    by natopa16
Alice in wonderland comparisons end at the magical door to another world. Spirited Away is animation at its best. Tightly paced, constantly charming and exciting without being annoying or overbearing like every Disney movie since Beauty and the Beast.
The story is not about a girl trying to escape from a bad life, or any variation of that movie archetype, rather it's a story about the willpower and strength of youth, with the typical Miyazaki strong-willed female, though perhaps the most memorable of all his female leads, which is extremely high praise.
There is also a strong environmental message to be found here, lamenting greed and pollution, and so forth... (Read More)

| | Nope, Miyazaki wouldn't go that far in his propaganda for his films; he has considerably more integrity than that. You won't lose out on too much from not watching Grave; overwrought and filled with histrionics... it's not deserving of being placed in the same category as Miyazaki's Ghibli films. |

| | I first saw Princess Mononoke while in the Carribean in 1997. To this day, in all honesty, I've seen nothing that comes close to the quality of work that was presented in this great masterpiece. |

| Princess Mononoke is still my favorite movie of all time.
No, Grave is not Miyazaki its Tsao Takahata (Only Yesturday, Pom Poko, My Neighbors the Yamadas) the co-founder of Ghibli.
#2 I have to disagree. Takahata's films are very different from Miyazaki's Ghibli films but they are still Ghibli films, and they are great in their own way. As long as your prepared for a really dark movie, Grave is a really good movie to watch, and I would say better than some of Miyazaki's Ghibli films (though not the two above). |

| Right now in China...Just bought boxset of Hayao Miyazaki films
Grave is included in the box set but i don;t know if its Miyazaki's.
Princess Mononoke was the best film I have ever seen not only because of the fact that a woman co-existed with nature and a spirit no less the whole rush from her character gives you a thrill when watching this movie. Spirited Away is a sad yet moving movie. It is true though how Chihiro shows us, the watchers, to stray away from greed and cleanliness is deemed in a way godly.
Never seen Grave so can;t really say much on that film. |
